Beyond Repair? How We Rebuilt a Wind-Damaged uPVC Door Frame

Strong winds forced open a uPVC door leading to a small storage room and broke the door frame apart. The customer wanted to know whether such extensive damage could be repaired.

After confirming how the door was used and assessing the damage, we advised that a repair was possible. Drawing on experience from similar frame repairs, we rebuilt and reinforced the damaged structure rather than automatically replacing the complete door.

The Problem

The door was fitted to a small storage room rather than serving as the main entrance to the house. It was a little-used uPVC door with a solid panel.

When strong winds forced the door open, the impact broke the frame connections and left the door assembly badly damaged. The customer asked whether it could be repaired rather than replaced.

Damage this extensive can make complete replacement appear to be the only practical option. In this case, our assessment and previous experience with similar repairs showed that the frame could be carefully rebuilt and reinforced.

The repair-first approach was based on the actual construction, condition and use of this particular door. Severely damaged doors should always be assessed individually before deciding between repair and replacement.

Rebuilding and Reinforcing the Frame

The broken frame sections were brought back together and their connections were strengthened using timber reinforcement inside the uPVC profiles. This provided solid support where the original joints had failed.

Metal repair plates were then added across the rebuilt connections to strengthen the completed assembly. These plates remain visible in the final footage and can be painted white to create a much less noticeable finish.

Seal, Handle and Door Geometry

We replaced the glazing seal that holds the solid door panel securely in position. A new handle was also fitted as part of the repair.

Reassembling the components was only part of the job. The door geometry was restored and the completed door was carefully adjusted so that the panel, frame and locking components aligned and operated correctly.

The Result

After rebuilding, reinforcing and aligning the structure, the door opened and closed correctly again. The full panel was held securely, the new handle operated properly and the repaired door returned to normal use.

The repair retained the existing door and frame instead of automatically replacing the complete unit. The visible metal reinforcement can be painted white as the final cosmetic step.
